Video Editing Tutorial
Goal
Learn to use a video editing program to make
a short movie.
- Launch "Movie Maker".
- Look at the choices under "Capture Video".
- Select "Import Pictures".
- Open the "Q:\[Teacher]\HandOut\moviemakerpics" folder;
switch to Thumbnail view; and select
"Black Bear", "Snake", "Tornado",
and "Wilderness".
- "Save Project" in your "My Videos"
folder in your home
directory. Use a standard filename with "Nature" as
the name.
- Place (drag & drop) each clip on the storyboard.
- Rearrange the clips whereever you want them in
the order you want them to play.
- Now rearrange in this order: 1. Wilderness, 2. Black Bear, 3. Tornado,
and 4. Snake.
- Select the first clip (click it) and then press play to
view your movie. Each clip will play for 5 seconds.
- Save it!
- Click on "Finish Movie" and "Save
to My Computer".
- In the "saved movie" box,
add "1clips" to the end of the filename.
- Browse to change the folder. Change the folder to your computer class folder.
It should be something like H:\Computers
7. Then click "Next".
- Click on "Show more choices" and then select "Other
settings".
- Find the setting with a "Video for dial-up access (38 Kbps)" and "160
x 120 pixels".
- Click "Next". Your movie will be "rendered" and
then automatically saved.
- Click "Finish", and then use Media Player to view your
movie. Close Media Player when done.
Part 2: Effects & Transitions (Video
of Part 2)
- Open the list labeled "Edit Movie" and click on "video
effects".
- Test all the effects by double-clicking on each one.
- Place "Ease In" on clip #1, "Film
Age, Old" on #2, "Hue, Cycles..."
on #3 ", and "Ease Out" on #4.
- Select your first clip, then play the movie.
- Save.
- Under the "Edit Movie" list, click on "video transitions".
- Test all the transitions by double-clicking on each one.
- Place "Circle" after clip #1, "Pixelate" after
clip #2, and "Shatter In" after clip #3.
- Select your first clip, then play the movie.
- Save.
- Click on "Finish Movie" and "Save
to My Computer".
- In the "saved movie" box (1.), enter your file name and
add "2effects" to the file name. Ex: 20091123nature7jonesbob2effects.
Then click "Next".
- Set it to "High Quality Video (large)" with "640
x 480 pixels".
- Click "Next", and after the movie renders, click
"Finish" to view the new movie.
- Raise your hand and politely ask your teacher
to look over your timeline.
- Watch the video to see the full directions
- In the "Edit Movie" list,
click on "make
titles or credits".
- Click on "beginning" and type "Nature" and then click "Done".
- Play the movie to see the title with it's animation.
- Select (click on) the second picture.
- Click "titles or credits",
click "title 'on' the selected clip", type "Bear",
and click "Done".
- The storyboard will become a timeline. Click "OK" to clear the
messages.
- Switch back to the storyboard view.
- Insert a credits title. It should say Credits, Editor - Your Name, Location
- Your school, and Date - Today's Date.
- Practice changing the font including the
style, size, color, background color, bold, etc.
- Create the video (render it) as version "3titles" as "Video
for ISDN (48 Kbps)".
- Raise your hand and politely ask your teacher
to look over your timeline.
- Switch to the timeline.
- Adjust the durations of full screen titles at the beginning and end of
the video.
- Change animations of titles.
- Adjust durations of each photo to 3.00 seconds (or as close as possible).
- Change the duration for each transition to 0.50 or 0.53 seconds.
- Line up the title overlay so it matches the gap between the transitions.
- Create the video (render it) as version "4timeline" as "High
Quality Video (large)".
- Raise your hand
and politely ask your teacher to look over your timeline.
Part 5: More Images & Timing
- Storyboard - Switch to the storyboard view.
- Pictures - Insert two more pictures: one between "Wilderness" and "Bear",
the other between "Tornado" and "Snake".
- Transitions - Insert transitions everywhere that they
are missing, and make sure every transition is different.
- Durations -- Ajust durations as follows:
- Transitions - 0.50 (or 0.53)
seconds
- Pictures - 2.00 (or 1.98) seconds
- Credits - 3.00 (or 2.98) seconds
- Overlays - Insert a title on top of every picture.
- Text -- Use the filename of that picture as the word for the title.
- Animation -- Use "subtitle" for
the animation.
- Color -- Change the color of each, so each one is a different color.
- Storyboard -- Switch back to the storyboard after inserting each one.
- Raise your hand and politely ask your teacher
to look over your timeline.
Part 6: Fine Tuning & Practice
- Video Tutorial - Watch
this video, follow along, then do the following steps.
- Overlay Alignment - Line up each title overlay so that
it matches its picture, and so it plays for the same duration as the
gap between
the
transitions.
- Title Duration - Change the duration of the title "Nature" slide
to 2.00 seconds (or as close as possible).
- Tune It - Play the video. Make sure all the titles show
up on the right slides. Adjust anything that needs to be tuning.
- Hint - If you did everything correctly, the movie will
now be about 13.20 seconds long.
- Enlarge - Grab the blue horizontal line above the timeline,
and pull that line all the way up, as high as it will go.
- Zoom - Zoom all the way in on the timeline, then zoom
out once. Press the "Rewind Timeline" button.
- Compare - Compare your timeline to the picture below.
Make sure that your timeline looks the same.
- Save - Save the project.
- Finish - Create the video (render or make it) as version "5final" as "High
Quality Video (large)".
- Rewind, get
ready to press the "Play Fullscreen", and then raise
your hand to show your teacher your timeline.
Part 7: Render & Hand In
- Click for directions on how to render the
movie and hand it in.

Notes for the Teacher
- The directions are written for Microsoft Windows Movie Maker
version 5.
- Make sure that several pictures are in a folder that all students can
access.
- Walk through all the steps on a student computer, while also logged in
as a student.
