Optimum Keyboarding Technique

Workstation & Body Position

  1. Chair all the way up

  2. Feet flat on the floor or on something (binder or chair feet)

  3. Feet slightly apart (for balance) but not crossed

  4. Bottom against back of seat

  5. Body straight

  6. Back of knees & legs parallel to floor

  7. Belly about one hand back from desk 

  8. Front edge of keyboard even with desk

  9. "B" key of keyboard lined up with your belly button

  10. Monitor straight ahead - in line with the "B" key

  11. Adjust monitor closer/farther and tilt up/down so easy to see

  12. THEN put fingers on the home keys

  13. Shoulders relaxed and even

  14. Elbows relaxed at sides with perhaps a tiny pull in

  15. Forearms about parallel to the floor

  16. Wrists straight & never touching anything

  17. Fingers curving down from above like a waterfall

  18. Fingers gently touching home keys

     

Keying Technique

Technique: 15 GWAM (Lcl)- 30 GWAM (Lcl)

  1. Fingers lightly on the home row keys A S D F   J K L ; 

  2. Hands nice and still: only fingers move

  3. Imagine coins resting on the back of each hand (or a cup of scary acid!).

  4. Strike each key with a light tap straight down with the finger tip

  5. Keep one thumb on the [Space Bar] for quick down and in motions.

  6. Do not bring your fingertips to come off keys.

  7. Press lightly - just enough to make the letter - not all the way down.

  8. Key as quietly as possible.

  9. Hint: Short fingernails make learning faster.

Green = pinky, Orange = ring, Blue = middle, Magenta = index
